The Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the top attractions in the state and the zoo has earned it with its excellent exhibits and education. Founded in 1971, the zoo currently holds 3,000 animals and 400 different species.
The zoo has exhibits such as Gorilla Forest, Pride of the Plains, Penguin Cove, African Veldt, and Tiger Trek. If you are interested in alternative ways to explore the zoo, you could try the tram or bus tour. The Sedgwick County Zoo is a great place to first-hand experience the wonders of animals.
The Keeper of the Plains is an imposing statue made of weathering steel that looks over the city of Wichita. It depicts a Native American chief praying to The Great Spirit. The five-ton statute was designed by local Wichitan and internationally-recognized artist Blackbear Bosin.
It was installed at the junction of Big and Little Arkansas rivers in 1974. The area between the two rivers is sacred for Wichita Native Americans. The statue and plaza are ADA accessible. Fire pits around the base of the statue are lit each night. The Mid-America All-Indian Center is located within walking distance from the statute. The Keeper of the Plains is a must-see!
